Australia to Provide $3 Billion to U.K. for AUKUS Submarine Reactors and Designs
In a significant move to bolster defense cooperation, Australia has pledged $4.6 billion Australian dollars ($3 billion USD) to the United Kingdom. This funding aims to facilitate the construction of nuclear-powered AUKUS submarines, part of the tripartite initiative with the U.S. to counter China's regional influence. The allocated funds will support the expansion of the Rolls Royce production line in Derby, U.K., which will manufacture the necessary nuclear reactors and cover design costs for the submarines. This agreement underscores the commitment to strengthening industrial capabilities to meet the ambitious timeframe for submarine production. Additionally, Australia's government-owned shipbuilder ASC will collaborate with British defense giant BAE Systems to construct the submarines at Adelaide's Osborne shipyard. This partnership reflects a significant step towards enhancing domestic shipbuilding capacity and bolstering Australia's naval capabilities. Despite challenges such as shipbuilding delays and budget pressures, the U.K. Defense Secretary emphasized the importance of investing in security amidst a changing global landscape. The commitment to the AUKUS partnership remains steadfast, with reassurances from the U.S. regarding increased production rates for submarines.
