Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal's Arrest Sparks Nationwide Protests
Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of New Delhi and a prominent figure in Indian politics, was arrested by the federal Enforcement Directorate on allegations of accepting bribes from liquor contractors. His party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), denies the accusations and plans to contest them in court. This arrest comes amidst a series of raids and investigations against opposition leaders by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, leading to accusations of political harassment. The opposition parties allege that the government is misusing its power to target political opponents ahead of the upcoming general elections, while dropping probes against defectors to Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP denies these accusations, stating that law enforcement agencies operate independently. The arrest of Kejriwal has sparked protests across India, with supporters condemning it as an attempt to undermine democracy and influence the elections. The opposition coalition, INDIA, of which AAP is a part, sees Kejriwal's arrest as a setback. However, it has also united opposition figures in denouncing what they perceive as undemocratic tactics by the ruling party.
In response, the BJP's spokesperson has accused Kejriwal's party of playing the "victim card" and called for his resignation from the chief minister post. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate continues its investigations into various opposition leaders, further intensifying the political climate in the country.
